From Insanity to Sanity: Why every Business needs a Coach
John called me last week, his voice carrying an edge of panic. “Chris, I just lost half my leadership team, everything has gone to hell in a handbasket”.
A few months back, John and I had sat down to discuss building redundancy into his leadership team. The conversation centered on risk management—preparing for sudden departures or life’s unexpected events. At the time, John had been confident: “Everything’s peachy. I don’t see any need for that now,” he had said. But here we were.
I shared with John how several years before as a new entrepreneur when I was leading my first company; in the space of 3 weeks, my CFO resigned because his wife wanted to move back to Alberta, my AR Clerk announced she had just got married and was taking off on a 3 month honeymoon traveling around SE Asia, my Office Manager gave me 2 weeks notice since she was moving to PEI to look after her aging parents, and my Operations Manager was diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer.
That experience changed my perspective for good. From that day forward, I built redundancy into every role on my leadership team. Not as a backup plan but as a strategy to keep us strong and focused no matter what life threw our way. We paired every key leader with a “buddy” who trained in their skills, responsibilities, and the nuances of the role. Not only did this provide support during sick days or holidays, but it created a culture of mutual respect and preparedness that has continued to pay dividends.
In business, our people and leaders are our most important resource. If we are distracted and not focused on these relationships, if we do not know what is going on in their lives, we run the risk of being blindsided as both John and I were.
Solving the Retention Puzzle with Redundancy and Support
These days I work with my clients to eliminate retention problems. The fast pace of business demands a well-drawn map, navigated by leaders who are present and proactive. My role as a business coach is to offer that map: helping leaders devise a roadmap through the daily decisions and dilemmas, the struggles of growth, and the countless challenges that come with building a company.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, experiencing limited growth despite your best efforts, or facing tough decisions that could make or break the next chapter, know this: a good business coach asks questions that you have not been asked before, provides objective advice and a guiding hand when needed. They help you develop a clear strategy for recovery, bolster your confidence, and hold you accountable as you forge ahead. They are more than an advisor—they’re your accountability partner.
In moments of struggle, I see the transformation in clients who work with someone who truly understands their goals. They gain clarity, become stronger decision-makers, and have a system for problem-solving. And when business is booming, a coach becomes even more crucial. They bring the tools, perspective, and strategic direction that leaders need to scale effectively without losing their balance.
Guidance from business coaches is not limited during a “struggling” phase of your business. If your business is experiencing a period of rapid growth, a coach can help manage this expansion effectively by providing you with the tools, perspective, and strategic planning necessary to scale your business effectively. They can help you identify opportunities for expansion, streamline operations, and improve your marketing and sales strategies.
The first step in finding the right coach? Look for someone with both skills and experience. Alignment of values, trust, and a healthy dose of humor are essential. Find a coach who challenges you, listens deeply, and, yes, makes the journey enjoyable.

How to Choose the Right Business Coach for Results
Are you ready to redefine your vision, streamline your operations, and set goals that push your business forward? Or perhaps you need specialized support—digital marketing strategies, financial management, customer retention, or team-building exercises? Recognizing your needs is the first step toward finding the right business coach, but knowing what to look for can make all the difference in creating lasting impact.
When selecting a coach, look for the essentials: a proven track record, a clear coaching methodology, positive client testimonials, and a flexible coaching schedule that works for you. These are the foundations that ensure a coach’s approach aligns with your business and values.
Ask the Right Questions
Interviewing potential coaches is a vital step in finding the right fit. Prepare questions that delve deep into their experience, methods, and personality. Ask how they approach problem-solving, how they handle feedback, and their views on continuous learning. Do they keep evolving? Are they as committed to growth as you are? A strong business coach should not only have the expertise but also a passion for guiding you through challenges and growth alike.
Invest in Quality Over Cost
Finally, consider the cost and time commitment involved. While the best business coaches often charge more, the value they bring can result in a substantial return on investment. Bargain-hunting can be tempting, but cutting costs may mean cutting quality—and, ultimately, the results.
Choosing the right business coach is more than just a smart business decision; it can be transformative. With the right partner, you’re setting yourself up for a journey of growth, resilience, and success.
